Cambodia/Cambodge-->Sihanoukville

Départ en bus de nuit, plus de 10h de route. Un autre voyage horrible. Les couchettes sont trop petites et il est difficile de se mouvoir. Je pose donc un de nos sacs un peu a l"écart et garde l'ordi et les papiers avec nous...Ceci n'empechera pas qu'il soit fouillé et qu'on nous vole nos disc durs. De surcroit le matelas d'Anara est pourri et a chaque bosse ou mouvement une odeur de poisson pourri émane de sous le siège...
Bref un voyage en or avec une arrivée à 5h du matin a Sihanoukville. On se rend en tuk-tuk a Serendipity Beach avec pour mission de trouver une chambre libre.

Departure by bus for more than 10hours travel. Another aweful travel. The couchette are too small and it's hard to move. So I put one of our bags not to far and keep the laptop and all the important documents with us. We will be however robbed during move the night, and the thief took our hard drives. Moreover, the Anara's matress was rotten and at every hump or a fishy rotten odour emaneted from under the seat....
Well, let say that was a golden travel with an arrival a 5 AM in Sihanoukville. We took finally the tuk tuk to reach Serndipity Beach with the purpose of finding a free room.



C'est en effet le nouvel an chinois. Cette fete est l'une des plus importante en Asie du sud est et octroie 3 jours de congés au cambodgiens. Ceux ci (notamment ceux de Phon Phem) quittent la capitale et se ruent a Sihanoukville. La vision est assez surréaliste et le premier sentiment est de vouloir quitter aussi vite que possible cet endroit. Les cambodgiens passent leur journée a la plage, assis au bar le long de la plage à manger des crabes ou seiches au bbq et à boire de la biere, se baignant tout habillé avec leur gilet de sauvetage... Des marchants ambulants (bbq portatifs, feux artifices..) mendiants éclopés, gamins collecteurs de bouteille et canettes renforcent cette image glauque....

Indeed, it's chinese new year eve. This celebration is one of the most importante in Asia and allow the cambodgian to take 3 days off. These one (espacilly from Phon Phem) leave the capital city and run to Sihanoukville. The first view is surrealistic and the first feeling that you get is to go away as fast as possible from this place. The cambodigians spend their day in the beach, by being sit in the bar along the beach drinking beers and eating bbq crabs or squids, swimming all dressed with red life jacket... Mobile sellers (portable bbq, fireworks..) lame beggars, stubby collector children tarnished the sinister image....


Les prix flambants pour cette occasion, on trouve une chambre libre pour 15$ après une heure de recherche  et je ne sais combien de visiste de "guesthouse". On pourra néanmoins rester qq jours dans le coin. La majorité des cambodgiens quittant le jour d'apres, l'endroit redevient plus humains. On decide d'aller visiter les "3iles" avec de la plongées inclus. L'ile principale fut bien paradisiaque mais la visibilité et le matériel de plongée scandaleux.. Bonnes nouvelles, nos amis Annie et Paul nous rejoignent et nous font découvrir une autre plage 15kms plus loin, plus tranquille dans le coin (Otréé beach). Pour s'y rendre on doit prendre un tuk-tuk qui doit rouler sur une piste de terre rouge bordées d'Eucalyptus.. On se croirait en Australie !! Quelle surprise que de voir ses arbres par ici ! On apprendre plus tard que l'Australie a généreusement donner des arbres au Cambodge pour l'après guerre.

With the increased prices due to this celebration, we finally found a room for 15$ after seeking one hour and visiting I don't know how many guesthouse. We will nevertheless stay there fews days. The majority of the cambodgians leaving the day after, the place become finally more livable. We decide to go to visit the "3islands" with included snorkelling. The main island was heavenly but the visibility and the snorkelling gear scandalous.. Good news, our friend Annie and Paul join us and make us discover another beach 15 kms away and more quiet (Otree beach). To go there we take a tuk-tuk and we have to drive on a red track lined by Eucalyptus... It looks like Australia !! What a surprise to see these trees here ! We will learn later that the Australia generously gave these one after the war.

Notre 3e jour sera splendide. On a en effet reserve une journée de plongée aux alentours de Koh Rong Sualem. On embarque a bord d'un bateau de 3 niveaux en bois organisant des tours de plongée (apnée). Par chance nous serons le seul personne avec le moniteur, ancien plongeur militaire. On aura droit a un tour en zodiac pour nous rendre sur le site de plongé.. Ca décoiffe. La visibilité ne fut pas géniale voir nulle mais les coraux furent splendides. Lors de la 2e plongée, 2 Batfish de + 30cm de diamètre se sont montré très curieux.  Koh Rong Sualem dispose d'une des plus belles plages qu'on ait pu voir. Le sable est litteralement blanc, l'eau transparente et peu profonde et ...personne n'est encore la (c'est en train de changer). Anara est tombée amoureuse de cette plage ! Par chance le moniteur m'a offert un tour de 5 min sur une bouée tirée par le zodiac, encore un peu plus de sensation en ce lieu insolite !.. Bref un gros coup de coeur !!!

Our 3rd day will be awesome. We booked a day for diving around Koh Rong Sualem. We board on a 3 floors wood boat which is used by a company organizing snorkelling tour. By luck, we are the only couple with the instructor, an old military diver. So, we had a free tour in zodiac to reach the dive site from the boat. That's rock ! The visibility was not very good, not to say bad however the reef were splendid. During the 2nd dive, 2 Batfish 30cm diameter wide were very curious. Koh Rong Sualem is also formed by one of the best beach we have seen since we travel. The sand is litterally white, the water is clear and shadow and... nobody is there (but that won't last). Anara fell in love with this place ! By luck, the instructor offered me a 5 min balloon zodiac pulled tour, more hectic feeling in this unsual place..  Well we love !!

Au 4e jour on reprend la route direction l'Est pour Kempot, notre derniere etape au cambodge avant le Vietnam.

The 4th day, we take the road again destination East to Kempot, our last step in Cambodia before the Vietnam.

Cambodia/ Cambodge -> Siemp Reamp ( Angkor Temples)

Le passage du Laos à notre premiere destination au Cambodge (Siem Reap) fut le pire de notre voyage !
Initialement prévu pour 12h de voyage, nous avons été trimballés et traités comme des moutons et pire encore : attente de plus de 3h sans indication pour un bus qui arriva plein à craquer. La seule option ( meme apres une dispute entre Anara et un membre de l'equipe)  fut de s'assoir sur des mini tabourets en plastiques dans la rangée centrale entre les sieges, une piste dans un etat pitoyable et une arrivée tardive a 1h00 du mat au proie au tuc-tuc (taxi locaux) pour nous conduire dans un hotel qui ne leur verse pas de commission et qui soit encore ouvert a cette heure... (une heure a tourner en ville pour ce faire !! )

Enfin toute cette epreuve fut recompensée par une ville charmante ou il fait bon vivre. Nous avons choisis de visiter les temples d'Angkor  sur une journée et de voir le plus fameux (Angkor wat) au lever du soleil (5h du mat), notamment pour eviter les grosses chaleurs par la suite. C'est impressionant de voir ce que l'homme peut realiser et construire mais aussi comment la Mère Nature peut retrouver ses droist. Cette place merite bien le titre de 8e merveille du monde !
Le jour d'apres nous sommes allés faire un tour dans un village "flottant" sur le plus grand cambodgien lac qui a le pouvoir de faire inverser le cours du Mekong (un des plus grand fleuves d'asie) lors de la saison des pluie. Cependant le prix demandé pour l'entrée en ce site particulier nous laissa un gout amer. Il est tout de meme surprenant de voir comment l'homme peut s'adapter en ces lieux.

Apres 3 jours sur place, nous réservons un bus de nuit pour nous rendre à Sihanoukville, ville cotiere.

The journey from the Laos to our first destination in Cambodia (Siem Reamp) was the worst in our travel ! Initially planed as a 12 hours trip, we have been transported and traited like sheep or even worst : we had to wait more than 3hours without any indication for a bus which when it arrived was already full. The only option (even after a fight between Anara and the staff) was to sit on small-children size plastic stool in the middle raw between the seats; the track was in a really bad shape and we arrived at 1:00 AM well-delivered for the tuc-tuc (Taxi). It was a fight to find a place still open and which was not paying comission to them (almost one hour  !!! )

Finally we have been rewarded for all this pain, the city was really chilling-out and it was good to stay there. We decided to visit Angkor Wat (temples) in the sunrise (5:00 AM) notably to avoid the big heat during the day. It's really impressing what human beign can realise and build but also how mother nature can take back her rights.
This place deserver its name of 8th wonder of the world !!

The day after, we went to the "floating village" located on the biggest cambodian lake. This lake has got the power to reverse the Mekong river (one of the biggest in Asia) watercourse during the wet season. However the price asked to enter into this special area was a total ripped off. It was nevertheless surprising to discover how the human being is able to adapt himself in such lands.

After 3 days spent in Siemp Reamp, we booked a nightbus to Sihanoukville, settled in the south cost.

Laos-> Champasar, 4000 Island (Part 2)

Champasar : Autrefois capitale du laos, c'est un avant gout des temples d'Angkor. Pour nous rendre en ces lieux, nous avons expérimentés les bus-couchettes pendant 10h... Essayez de dormir quand vous n'avez pas de place pour bouger et que le chauffeur roule comme un timbré sur une route/piste et klaxonne des qu'il dépassent qqn, prenez un autre mini van pour 2h, marchandez pour traverser le mekong soit disant déja inclus dans le prix du billet, puis marcher 30 min avec vos sacs avant d'atteindre les premieres auberges.... Si vous avez assez de forces louer un velo et faites 20km.. Attention a la chaleur !!! Mais le site classé vaut le détour  néanmoins. :-)  et vous donne un idée de ce à quoi Angkor Wat ressemblera.

Champasar : Once capital city of Laos, it's a good way get an idea before Angkor temples. To go there, we tried the sleeping-bus during 10h... Try to sleep when you don't have enough place to mouve, when your driver is crazy with his bus on the track and use the horn each time he's overtaking someone, then take a minivan for 2hours, bargain to cross the mekong for free because normally already included in your ticket fee, walk for 30min with your bag before finding the first guesthouse.... If you're brave enough you can rent a bike for a 20kms ride under a sweltering sun!!!! Nevertheless, the site is worth to visit and give an idea of what Angkor's going to be.

4000 Islands : Voila un endroit bien agréable. Le mekong circule autour de nombreuses iles et ilots et une certaine quietude raigne ici. Nous sommes restés sur Don Khone. Anara sympathisera avec notre voisin d'auberge un gibon résidant lui aussi dans une auberge.  Velo en main nous avons exploré l'ile pour voir les cascades et sommes allés observer les dauphins d'eau douce (seulement 110 encore en vie). Du bon temps, des retrouvailles avec des copains de voyages. Point negatifs, les blancs sont soumis de payer pour chaque activité ou passage de point particulier..ce qui a force révolte surtout quand on demande le meme prix pour un check point afin de se rendre au nord de l'ile (alors qu'on consomme déja sur place) que le trajet de 20 min pour nous rendre sur l'ile !!

4000 Islands : Such a good spot. The mekong streams here around plenty of islands and small islands very peaceful. We stayed on Don Khone. Anara  had her crush on our neighboor, a gibon (monkey) living he also in a "guesthouse". On a bike, we ride around the island to discover the cascade and went observe the freshwater dolphin (only 110 remain alive in the world). That was really great even more when our friend joined us. Drawbacks, the "white people" are required to pay everething, notably a check point to join the north of the island as expensive as the 20min boat trip to come from the mainland to this island..
