Vietnam II : Mekong's Delta (le delta du Mekong) -> Can Tho

Sunrise on the Mekong

Apres une semaine sur Phu Quoc, on rejoint la ville côtière et chaotique de Rah Gia afin d'attraper un mini-bus pour Can Tho, notre destination.
3 villes majeures situées sur le Mekong semblent etre d'interet touristique. On se rendra uniquement sur Can Tho et My Tho.

After a week in Phu Quoc, we reach the chaotic coastal town  Rah Gia to catch a mini-bus for Can Tho, our destination.
3 majors cities are located on the Mekong and reputated of touristic interest. We only went to Can Tho and My Tho.




Can Tho est principalement réputée pour ses marchés flottants, ses canaux et sa quietude (à considérer selon les critères vietnamiens ;-) pour l'aspect tranquille),  Nous prendrons un tour via la guesthouse recommandée par Lonely Planet. Ce fut plutot une déception par rapport a la description qui y était faite. Notre premiere nuit fut plutot courte car occupant une chambre au rez de chaussée et dérangé par le bruit de la famille propriétaire habitant ici.

La visite du marché se faisant a la levée du soleil, nous nous levons donc à 4H30....Tous les marchands vietnamiens se rassemblent sur le Mekong pour effectuer leurs achats en fruits et legumes et transitent les marchandises en gros de barque en barque.  Notre trajet prevoyait egalement un tour par des canaux plus authentique, mais des pecheurs ayant posé des filets nous obligent a rebrousser chemin. Et a notre bonne habitude, notre bateau tombe en panne... on doit attendre le retour d'une autre (ici les chauffeurs etaient des femmes) guide pour nous remorquer...



Can Tho is mainly famous for its flotting markets, its canals and its tranquility (according to the vietnamese criteria). We booked a tour via the guesthouse recommended to Lonely Planet. However we were disapointed expecting more according to the description we had had by the owner. Moreover our first night was short because of  the location in the ground floor of the room and the noise of familly leaving in this area.
The market visit is done in the sunrise, so we woke up at 4.30 AM. All the vietnamese merchants gather on the Mekong to purchase wholesale their fruits and vegs and the pass their merchandises trough bark to bark.  Our travel should also have included to cross some more authentic canals, but because of some fishnet blocking the passage, we had to turn back. As we are used, our boat broke down... so we had to wait the other driver-guide (here, there are all females) came back to drag us...





On mangea dans un restaurant réputé pour sa bonne nourriture bon marché et qui sert de chef lieu aux expats locaux. Nous n'avons pas été déçu ! Situé juste en face la grande statue de Ho Chi Minh, il offre une vue différente. Comme à leur  habitude plusieurs vendeurs (ici de cacahuetes, jack fruits ou oeuf cuits) longent les trottoirs.

Caramel Pork 

Le parc autour de la statue et le long du Mekong permet de voir de nombreux enfants et parents jouer au cerfs-volants de part et autres de la rives. Il y en a tellement qu'on dirait des oiseaux planants dans le ciel.

We ate in a restaurant famous for its good cheap food which is the headquarter for the local expats. We have not been disapointed! Located opposite to the big Ho Chi Minh statue, its offering a different view. As usual, sellers (peanuts, jack fruit or eggs skewer) go along the sidewalks.
The parc around the statue running parallel to the Mekong allow us to admire the many children and parents playing with their kites on either side . There are so many that they look like bird gliding over the sky.

Le soir venu nous essayons un thé au fruit gelifié (jack fruit) et autre... Je dirais que ce fut ..particulier. Mais apparemment ici ils en raffolent.Autre découverte culinaire : le serpent. J'ai (Julian) pris un serpent au curie. En principe celui-ci est sensé venir d'un elevage, tout comme les chiens que l'on peut trouver dans certains endroits (mais il faut chercher). Par contre je ne sais pas ce qu'il en ait pour les rats qui sont affichés sur le menu de certains restaurant.... Enfin pour ceux qui voudrait s'essayer au serpent, ca se rapproche un peu du poulet, mais tres tres elastique. Je n'ai pas été convaincu bien que la sauce curie soit parfaite.


At night, we tried a fruit jelly bubble tea.... I'd say it was... weird. But apparently poeple love it here.

Green Curry sauce - SNAKE

Another culinary discovery was : snake. I (Julian) tried a curry-snake. In theroy, it's supposed to come from a breeding farm, like dogs you can find in certain restaurant (but you really have to look for to find them). However I don't know where the rat you can see on the menu in certain place, come from.... Well, that to say that if you are interesting by eating snake, it's said to be close to chiken but really really chewy. I didn't like the meat  although the curry sauce was perfect.


Seconde nuit dans une chambre au meilleur standing puis nous partons pour My Tho.

Second night in the a better standing room then we left to My Tho.
